How do you plant lettuce?

Plant lettuce by choosing a planting site that receives part sun, planting at the right time, preparing the soil, and sowing and watering the seeds. You need compost, lettuce seeds and a tiller.
- Choose a good planting location
Choose a planting location for the lettuce that receives part sun. The soil needs to be loamy and well drained with a pH between 6.0 and 6.5.
- Plant at the seeds at the right time
Start the planting process when temperatures range between 45 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. The seeds can survive snowfall and a light frost.
- Prepare the soil
Prepare the planting site by mixing compost or other organic material into the soil a week before sowing the seeds. Till the ground thoroughly so that there are no large clods of dirt.
- Sow the seeds
Plant the seeds in 15-inch rows, and cover the seeds with at least 1/4 inch of soil. Plant leaf lettuce seeds 4 inches apart, loose-headed lettuce seeds 8 inches apart and firm-headed lettuce seeds 16 inches apart. If you scatter or broadcast the seeds over the planting site instead of planting them in rows, thin the plants as they grow.
- Water the plants
Immediately after sowing the seeds or transplanting seedlings, water the planting area thoroughly.
