Plant pumpkin seeds by choosing a sunny location for the pumpkin patch, planting the seeds at the right time, using fertile soil, preparing the planting site, and thinning the plants. You need pumpkin seeds, a trowel and compost.
- Choose a good location
Choose a location for planting that receives plenty of sunlight. The site must be large so the pumpkins have room to spread their vines.
- Plant at the right time
Plant the seeds after the last frost once the soil reaches at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Choose the soil
Choose well-drained and fertile soil to plan the seeds.
- Prepare the planting site
Loosen the top 12 to 15 inches of soil. Mix in aged manure and a 4-inch layer of compost. Arrange the soil in mounds to create a warm, well-drained area for the seeds to grow. Space the mounds at least 4 feet apart.
- Plant the seeds
Dig four or five 1-inch holes in each mound. Place the pumpkin seeds in the holes, and cover them with soil.
- Thin the plants
Once the plants are 3 inches tall, thin them by cutting the stem of the plant at soil level. Do not grow more than three seedlings in each hill.
