What is a platinum arowana?

The platinum arowana is a white or platinum-colored arowana that is considered one of the most expensive freshwater aquarium fishes in the world. The source of its coloration is a reduced ability to produce pigment known as leucism, which is similar to albinism.

Arowanas are long, heavily-armored fish native to bodies of freshwater in South America, Africa, Asia and Australia. The arowana is specialized to leap great distances out of the water to catch insects and even birds. Arowanas are known for their parental care and keep their young in their mouths until they are mature enough to leave. Due to its large size, the arowana must be kept in tanks with at least 150 gallons in capacity.
