The plot of "Desiree's Baby" is that the main character has a child at a time when it is unacceptable to have interracial relations. The story revolves around racism in Creole Louisiana during the antebellum period.

"Desiree's Baby" follows a girl who adopted by a wealthy French Creole couple in antebellum Louisiana. She soon falls in love with a well respected man from another wealthy Creole family, and they marry and have a child. The child turns out to have dark skin and it is assumed that Desiree is part black. Desiree is rejected from society, but it is later revealed that her husband is the one who is half black.
