Plumbago, which is aso known as leadworth, is a mat-forming wiry perennial that spreads by rhizomes to form an attractive ground cover. Plumbago is a versitile species that can act as a ground cover, potted plant or shrubbery. Similar to other groundcovers, plulmbago can be invasive when growing in optimum conditions.
Plumbago typically grows up to 10 inches tall on erect stems. The leaves are obovate to oval shaped and are shiny and green. Plumbago is the ideal plant to plant alongside spring bulbs, as the foliage emerges when the bulb foliage dies back. These plants provide a green leafy texture to gardens in the summer and produce blue flowers beginning in mid-summer and reddish leaves in the fall.
