What does a poblano pepper look like?

A poblano pepper is a heart-shaped pepper that is approximately 4 inches long and over 2 inches wide. The pepper contains thick walls and has a dark green color when ripening, followed by a dark reddish brown hue at maturity.

The relatively large poblano pepper is one of the most popular peppers in Mexico. The poblano pepper bush contains several stems and can reach heights of up to 25 feet. When smoked and dried, this pepper is known as a "chipotle" and measures between 1,000 and 2,000 on the Scoville heat scale. Young peppers feature a purplish-green hue and ultimately reach a dark red when mature, at times appearing almost black.
