Pokeweed berries contain trace amounts of poison. The roots, stems and leaves of the plant contain the most poison. Berries and leaves that have been cooked twice separately in boiling water may be safe to eat but can still be unsafe. Pokeweed roots are never safe to eat.
According to the National Library of Medicine, symptoms of pokeweed poisoning include convulsions, headache and nausea. If pokeweed poisoning is suspected, it is important to seek medical help immediately. When calling for emergency help, determine the time the plant was eaten, how much was eaten and what part of the plant was eaten.
