To polish brass, mix a paste of baking soda and distilled white vinegar. Rub the mixture onto the brass item with a soft cloth in a circular motion. Rinse the item well with warm water, and polish it to a shine with a clean, dry cloth.
- Mix baking soda and distilled white vinegar to form a paste
Pour some baking soda into a bowl. Stir in enough distilled white vinegar to make a soft paste.
- Rub the paste onto the brass item
Work the paste onto the surface of the brass item with a soft cloth. Work in a circular motion until the entire surface has been rubbed with the paste. Do not use a rough cloth, scour pad or brush, as these may scratch the item. The paste dissolves tarnish through a chemical reaction, so scrubbing is not necessary.
- Rinse the brass item well with warm water
Rinse the brass item under warm running water to remove all the paste. For large items, use a cloth and a bucket of warm water. Rinse the cloth frequently, and change the water as necessary to keep it clean.
- Polish with a dry, soft cloth
Rub the brass surface in a circular motion with a dry, soft cloth until it is shiny.
