The most popular indoor sport in the United States is basketball. Invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, the game ranks as the third-favorite sport overall among young adults aged 18 to 29, trailing only outdoor sports football and soccer.

While a recent SFIA council study revealed a drop in participation among youths aged 6 to 18 in recent years, similar figures were also reported in baseball, football and soccer, with ice hockey and lacrosse the only team sports showing a substantial increase in popularity. At the college and professional level, NCAA basketball and the NBA remain among the most-followed sports leagues in America, trailing just the NFL, MLB and NCAA football.
