Popular PBS television shows include "Sesame Street," "Downton Abbey," "Frontline," "America's Test Kitchen" and "Antiques Roadshow." Other well-known PBS television shows include "Nature," "Call the Midwife," "Arthur" and "Charlie Rose" as of 2016.

"Downton Abbey," which appears as part of the PBS "Masterpiece" program, is one of the network's most popular shows. The premiere of the show's second season in January 2012 took place on Super Bowl Sunday, and it received the second largest audience at 9 p.m. that evening.

PBS launched in 1970, taking over a role previously played by National Educational Television. PBS features many programs on fine arts, history and science, among other topics. Past PBS shows that were popular included "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," "Reading Rainbow" and "The Electric Company."
