Some of the most popular books in John Sandford's "Prey" series are "Rules of Prey," "Gathering Prey" and "Field of Prey." There are 25 total novels in the best-selling detective series, as of June 2015.

The series features the fictional protagonist Lucas Davenport, a detective living in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In addition to helping the police force track down serial killers, Davenport also develops role-playing games in the style of "Dungeons and Dragons." The original novel, "Rules of Prey," was published in 1989, while "Gathering Prey" was published in 2015. Davenport is shown to have a somewhat warped and manipulative investigation style.
