The Amazon Fire TV and Roku sticks don't require an external device to operate, but instead, function as slightly weaker variants of the set-top boxes. The Fire TV and the Roku 4 both offer quad-core processors for added power, but this comes at the expense of the space saving design the sticks offer. The Fire TV and Chromecast products both use a custom version of the Android operating system, while the Roku 4 uses a Linux based operating system.
