Are Portuguese people Hispanic?

Hispanic is defined in a variety of ways, but Portuguese people generally are not considered Hispanic. Some government agencies explicitly include Portuguese people and people of Portuguese descent in their definitions of Hispanic, however.

The term Hispanic generally refers to people with some ties to Spain. People from Spain are included, and those with strong ties to the Caribbean and areas in the New World colonized by Spain are included as well. Under strict definitions, people of Portuguese and Brazilian descent are not included; however, some government agencies, recognizing the ties between Portuguese and Spanish colonization in the New World, choose to include people of Portuguese and Brazilian origin or descent as a matter of convenience.
