As of 2015, research is still underway to develop a solution to dissolve cataracts with eye drops, states WebMD. The only effective treatment for cataract at the present is surgery.
Researchers from the Shiley Eye Institute at the University of California, San Diego, state that an organic compound known as lanosterol may dissolve clumped proteins that result in cataracts. Six weeks of administration of drops with this compound worked to completely clear the vision of three dogs with natural cataracts. While lab tests on animals indicate that lanosterol can prevent and clear cataracts, research is still underway concerning its use in humans, states WebMD.
