It is possible to grow grass in a shaded area by selecting the right type of grass, managing the ornamentals and modifying the normal practices to suit a particular type of grass. Pruning shady trees also helps allow light to get to the grass.
There are certain grasses that do better in shady areas, such as fine fescues. Some grasses also perform well in certain geographical locations than other. For example, centipedegrass, zoysiagrass and Bermudagrass do well in Coastal Plains and Midlands. Reduce the amount of nitrogen applied to the grass to reduce the risk of disease and water only when necessary. The ornamentals near the grass should be deeply rooted.
