It is possible to roast hazelnuts still in the shell. Roasting hazelnuts while still in the shell makes it easier to remove the nuts from their shells and add a depth of flavor to the nut. Hazelnuts can be eaten raw, chopped to make a pastry coating or ground into a paste to make hazelnut butter.
Roasting hazelnuts in the shell only takes a few minutes and a couple of steps.
Step 1: Preheat the oven
Heat the to medium heat, such as 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 2: Arrange the hazelnuts
Spread the hazelnuts out in an even layer onto a baking sheet.
Step 3: Roast the nuts
Place the baking sheet into the oven, and roast for between 10 and 15 minutes. Remove the nuts and place them into a large kitchen towel to steam for about a minute.
Step 4: Remove the shells
Rub the nuts vigorously in the towel to remove the shells. Allow the nuts to cool completely before using.
