What is postconventional morality?

Postconventional morality is classified as the stage of morality in which people have set their own morals and act according to those morals. Postconventional morality is the highest moral state in Lawrence Kohlberg's moral development model.

For the most part, people who have reached the postconventional morality stage have high ethics and morals that typically match the norms set by society. If an occasion arises when the person's morals do not match societal norms, the person often acts within his or her own beliefs.

According to Kohlberg's moral development model, people go through three stages as they develop personal morality. The stages are preconventional morality, conventional morality and postconventional morality.
