Potassium is a solid at standard temperature and pressure. It has a melting point at 146.3 degrees Fahrenheit and a boiling point of 1398 degrees Fahrenheit.
Potassium is characterized as being a very soft, reactive metal. The metal reacts with air to form an oxide coating. It is not found in nature in its pure metallic state due to being so reactive. It is only found bonded to other elements. Potassium is most widely used as a fertilizer by the agricultural industry, but it has other uses in the pharmaceutical industry. It is needed for both plant and animal life.
