On Dec. 21, 2012, the world was predicted to end because the ancient Mayan calendar ended on this day. Sources have discredited that belief and say that there were no prophecies by the Mayans of the world ending on that day.

The Mayan civilization was located in South America. The Mayans were avid astronomers and predicted that in 5,125 years (from the time of the prophecy) the sun would explode and destroy the world. These people developed complex calendars and utilized mathematics in predicting the duration of human existence.

Before Dec. 21, 2012, some individuals planned accordingly and sold their assets because of the prophecy.
