Prednisone is a medication for cats that treats nervous system disorders, cancer, inflammation, Addison's disease, and many other disorders and diseases. It is a steroid that suppresses the immune system and reduces inflammation. It is FDA-approved and available only by prescription.
Prednisone comes in the form of injections, oral liquids and tablets, and it can be given to both cats and dogs. The medication, which is a corticosteroid, works by resembling a naturally occurring hormone produced in the adrenal cortex. Some of the side effects associated with prednisone are altered behavior, vomiting, panting, delayed healing, aggression and diabetes after prolonged use.
