What is the present-day name of Mesopotamia?

Mesopotamia refers to the area of land between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. There is not one present-day country which Mesopotamia comprises. Mesopotamia is the present-day area of parts of Iraq, Kuwait, Syria, Turkey and Iran.

Major present-day cities within the Mesopotamia region include Baghdad and Basra. Baghdad is the capital of Iraq and is situated by the Tigris River in the central part of the country. Basra is the capital of the Basra Governate and is Iraq's main port. The Basra Governate is located in southern Iraq between Kuwait and Iran. The Tigris and Euphrates rivers meet north of Basra and flow into the Persian Gulf.
