According to WebMD, the best way to prevent foot cramps at night include taking a warm bath and doing stretching exercises without pointing the toes before bed to keep the muscles in the feet flexible. Other preventative measures include staying hydrated, getting adequate rest every day and soaking feet in warm water.

WebMD also lists various ways to prevent night-time foot cramps during daytime hours. Doing warm up stretches before and after exercise ensures that any active muscle, including those in the feet, does not shorten or cramp. Maintaining a balanced diet filled with potassium, magnesium and calcium can also lessen the occurrence of foot cramps and improve muscle function. These minerals are found in foods such as yogurt, milk, cheese, bananas and fresh vegetables. The use of proper footwear and orthotics, such as sole inserts, take strain off of the feet to avoid foot cramps. The usage of alcohol or tobacco can dehydrate the body, so cessation of both may lead to fewer instances of foot cramps. In some cases, foot cramps may be caused by certain medications, including Albuterol, Tolcapon, Donepezil, Proventil, Ventolin, Furosemide and Lovastatin. WebMD suggests scheduling a consultation with a doctor or physician if foot cramps persist despite taking preventative measures.
