What is the process of mitosis?

Mitosis is the process that most cells use in order to replicate themselves. It involves replicating the cell's DNA, as well as cell organelles, and then splitting into two distinct cells. Replication is an important part of an organism's survival.

During the first phase of mitosis, the prophase, the DNA begins replicating itself and the cell aligns structures for the rest of the process. In the second phase, the metaphase, the DNA is converted into chromosomes. Next, in the anaphase, the chromosomes divide into the two sides of the cell so that the cell can then split apart in the telophase. The last phase is called the interphase, which is the typical resting state of a cell.
