The Krebs cycle, also known as the citric acid cycle, is a cellular process that produces both NADH and FADH2. This process takes place in the cell's mitochondrial matrix and is one of the three parts of aerobic respiration, which is when cells convert oxygen and sugar into energy.
In the Krebs cycle, the chemical pyruvate, which is created through the process of glycolysis, is broken down through oxidation. For each molecule of glucose that enters the cycle, it produces six molecules of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, two molecules of flavin adenine dinucleotide, four molecules of carbon dioxide and two molecules of adenosine triphosphate, which is the energy unit that powers the cell.
