Do professional painters make bids based on square footage?

Professional painters make bids based on square footage. However, while square footage is a primary factor, it is not the only one that painters consider when bidding on a job.
Whether the job is for an interior or exterior space, the professional painter must know the surface's square footage to make a knowledgeable bid on the job. Other factors that the painter must take into consideration include the market rates for the location; overhead costs, which include transportation and office expenses; the cost of the paint and other consumables, such as painter's tape and masks; preparation and clean-up costs; labor hours; and the painter's own experience-level and reputation.
