A professional wine taster is called a sommelier. The sommelier manages wines in a restaurant, discovers and researches new wines, and determines the most appetizing pairings of wine and food.
Sommelier is a world-wide recognized occupation requiring certification and study. The Court of Master Sommeliers provides four levels of certification, which include a binding code of ethics and conduct. Since its implementation in 1969 until 2014, only around 200 people have been awarded a level four certification. This level certifies them as a Master Sommelier. Level three certification earns the achiever the title of Advanced Sommelier, and level two certification earns them the title of Certifed Sommelier.
