German postal codes consist of five digits attached to a postal or street address for sorting out mails and parcels. Some prominent German postal codes are those for its nine major geographic regions.
Germany is one of the first countries to introduce postal codes which are also known as ZIP codes. Before reunification, West Germany prefixed the letter W to a four-digit postal code while East Germany used the letter O, for "ost" or "east," to its own set of four-digit postal codes. Other prominent German postal codes are for its major cities such as Dresden, Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover and Dusseldorf in addition to Koln, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Munich and Nuremberg.
