What proof is Moonshine?
By Forinfos - 15/05/2026 - 0 comments
Moonshine is often around 150 proof, although it can be as high as 190 proof. The term moonshine refers to any spirit made in an illegal still, so the proof varies for each moonshine.
One commonly used moonshine recipe is corn meal, sugar, yeast and water. Almost any type of grain can be used, but corn is a popular choice. Moonshine is not aged like commercial alcohols, which gives it a harsher taste. Since production of moonshine isn't regulated, it can be dangerous to drink. During the Prohibition, some moonshine caused blindness or death in those who drank it. Dangerous moonshine occurs due to manufacturing mistakes or poisonous ingredients intended to enhance the taste.
