What is the proper depth for planting garlic?

Garlic should be planted 1 to 2 inches underground. After planting, add approximately 4 inches of straw, grass clippings or leaves to the top of the bed. This mulch will protect the garlic bulb from freezing.

Garlic can be planted in the fall or in the spring, and is harvested between July and August in the Northern Hemisphere. When planting, cloves should be separated and planted 4 to 6 inches apart in rows.

The blunt end of each clove should point down, and it will develop roots when the garlic begins to grow. Cloves should develop leaves in approximately two weeks. However, garlic planted in northern climates in the fall may remain dormant until spring.
