Is it proper to give money for a funeral?

Money is typically not an appropriate gift at a funeral. Exceptions to this do occur, and if the family is left in a state of extreme financial difficulty as a result of the passing of one of its members, it can be appropriate to give money.
More often, gifts of remembrance are appropriate, especially when the family has requested this instead of flowers. Common gifts of remembrance include donations in the name of the bereaved to a favorite charity, his alma mater or to a research fund for the disease or condition the bereaved suffered. Gifts of food, toys for children and of time to help with household management are also appropriate for grieving family members.
