A property shared by molecular compounds is that they are comprised of at least two different molecules. If, for example, the same element combines with another atom of itself, it is not a molecular compound, but a molecule of that element.

Another property shared by molecular compounds is the distribution of electrons between the elements that make up the compound. This is a necessary but insufficient condition to be classified a molecular compound; identical elements can bind together similarly but do not count as compounds since they are not different from each other, as in the case of molecular hydrogen.
