How do I protect my clothes from dampness?

Clothes can be protected from dampness by ensuring that they are dry before storing them and by inspecting their storage area for leaks or moisture. Silica gel packets, charcoal briquettes and water repellents also work. Running a fan or using a dehumidifier reduces the level of moisture in the area.
Humidity can lead to the growth of mold and mildew. To reduce household humidity and lower the risk of mold, the EPA recommends venting appliances that produce moisture, such as clothes dryers, stoves and kerosene heaters, to the outside. Opening windows also reduces humidity, especially when showering. The ideal indoor humidity is between 30 and 50 percent.
