Is protein in urine a symptom of diabetes?

Protein in urine is a symptom of diabetes, but it is also a symptom of many other diseases, according to Mayo Clinic. Protein may also be temporarily present in urine from causes such as stress, fever or strenuous exercise.
Kidneys are responsible for filtering waste products from the blood while retaining nutrients such as proteins, states Mayo Clinic. Aside from diabetes, conditions such as heart disease, kidney infection, and high blood pressure allow proteins to pass through the kidney's filters into the urine. Other symptoms, including frequent hunger, blurred vision, frequent urination and increased thirst, indicate that the cause may be diabetes.
