The Boreal Plains are primarily located in the Canadian provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Small parts of the provinces of British Columbia and the Northwest Territories are also home to the Boreal Plains.
Boreal Plains Ecozone are around 403,891 square miles in area. The area contains Cretaceous shale bedrock flattened by glaciers during the Ice Age. Much of the area is heavily forested, covered with spruce, fir, aspen and birch trees. Animals commonly found in the Boreal Plains Ecozone include black bears, elk, coyote, gophers, beavers, owls and hawks. Common fish in the area include trout, pike, whitefish and perch.
