When do you prune fruit trees?

The best time to prune fruit trees is during winter, although pruning in the summer may not necessarily affect the tree. The absence of foliage during the winter makes it easier to see what needs to be done.
To prune fruit trees, begin by removing damaged, dead or diseased wood. Prune any sprouts coming from the trunk. Inspect the main branches for straight sprouts and prune them, and avoid leaving stubs.
Remove branches that cross paths with others, grow towards the center of the tree or grow downwards. Use sharp shears to achieve easy, clean cuts. Dip the shears in isopropyl alcohol solution for at least one minute between trees to avoid spreading disease.
