Why does my PS3 keep freezing?

If a Sony Playstation 3 system freezes during startup or before launching a game, files on the hard drive may be damaged. If the system freezes while a game is playing, it may be due to corrupted game installation files or a damaged game disc.

If the system is freezing on startup or while on the XMB, Sony suggests entering Safe Mode and selecting the Restore File System option. This attempts to identify and repair any damaged files. Should this fail, Sony advises selecting the Restore PS3 System option, which re-formats the hard drive and restores the system to factory settings. If the freezing only occurs during a specific game, re-installing the game's installation data may fix the problem.
