As of 2010, online news sources have surpassed print news in ad revenue, suggesting that the changing tastes of the public prefer the immediacy of raw news over standard journalism. With the advent of social media, online news outlets seem likely to one day replace traditional journalistic news sources.
Roughly half of social networking users have shared news images, videos or stories. Often, this can occur just as the news is occurring, not allowing journalists the time to make a traditional report. Research in 2014 has shown that upwards of 14 percent of social media users upload their own images or videos of breaking news as it's happening.
