A 1394 net adapter or network connection is a high-speed serial connection that is used to connect a PC to peripheral devices such as external storage and multimedia devices, such as digital cameras and camcorders. The 1394 or IEEE 1394 is also known as FireWire, it and is used on systems running the Windows XP platform.
On systems using Windows XP, Me or Windows Server 2003, the FireWire can be used to network two systems via a TCP/IP protocol. The advantage of using such a connection rather than an Ethernet is that the FireWire can support speeds of 400 Mbps, and is more useful when transferring large amounts of data.
