U.S. Customs and Border Protection uses the I-94 form to track arrivals and departures of foreign travelers who are granted entry into the United States. The Department of Homeland Security uses the form for security purposes.
The form is typically electronically and is automatically filled out and tracked for sea and air travelers based on their electronic travel records.
The paper form of the I-94, which is typically used at land points of entry into the United States, is attached to the traveler's passport. The form notes the traveler's admission date, admission class and the date to which the traveler can stay. The traveler must surrender the I-94 form when he leaves the United States.
