The purpose of skin removal surgery is to remove loose or sagging skin after considerable weight loss. The most common type of skin removal surgery is called a body lift or body contouring, explains WebMD.
During body contouring, the surgeon removes excess skin in the abdominal region with a single cut along the abdomen. He also lifts and tightens other areas of the body as needed, including the arms, buttocks, thighs, hips and waist. The results usually are long-lasting if the person's weight remains consistent. However, some people have scarring and others have continued issues with sagging skin, says WebMD.
