You can place a fraud alert on your credit report by contacting a credit reporting agency and telling them that you are or may become a victim of fraud. Putting a fraud alert on your credit report is free.
- Contact one of the big three credit reporting agencies
Contact one of the big three credit reporting companies to report your concerns, and they will alert the other two. The three credit reporting companies are Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You can find contact information on the companies' respective websites.
- Tell the company that you want a fraud alert on your credit report
Alert the credit company that you think you have been or are in danger of being a victim of identity theft or other credit fraud. A fraud alert makes it harder for an identity thief to take out credit in your name because the credit reporting agency alerts the creditor that there is a fraud alert on your account when the creditor tries to pull your credit report.
- Renew your fraud alert
A fraud alert only stays active for 90 days, so call and renew your fraud alert at that time if you think that your credit is still at risk.
