What is quiescent current?

Quiescent current is the amount of current that is used by a circuit when it's not in active use. It is the base current rate that is present in a circuit and is generally less than the amount of current needed to process a signal.

Quiescent current is also called ground current or supply current. One example of a quiescent current is the energy used by a television that is turned off but plugged into an outlet.

In circuits with low-dropout regulators, the quiescent current maintains the regulator's circuitry and is what accounts for the observed difference between the input and output currents.
