Are raccoons nocturnal?

Raccoons are primarily nocturnal. They emerge at night and look for crayfish, frogs, mice and insects. Raccoons that live in cities seek out garbage cans to scavenge for food, and they can eat almost anything.
Raccoons have five long sensitive dexterous fingers on their front paws, and they rely on these fingers to obtain food. In the wild they spend a lot of time feeling for food in bodies of water with their sensitive fingers. Raccoons that live near humans use their dexterous paws to open containers in search of food.
They hibernate over the winter in a den, and their cubs are born in early spring, remaining in the den until they are 2 months old.
