What are railroad yards?

By Forinfos - 17/07/2025 - 0 comments

A railroad yard is an area densely populated with railroad tracks most commonly used for freight purposes. The idea behind railroad yards is to have an area where trains can store their freight cars and switch lines.

Some of the larger railroad yards can harbor hundreds or even thousands of train cars. In the past, there were railroad yards about 100 miles apart, as it was necessary for steam-powered trains to refuel that often. However, the larger, more efficient rail yards have taken precedent in recent years, so there has been a sharp decrease in the use of small rail yards.
