What is Ramie fabric made of?

Ramie fabric is made from fiber that is harvested from the Ramie, or Boehmeria, plant, which is a Chinese nettle belonging to the Urticaceae family. Clothing crafted from Ramie fiber breathes well and is comfortable for humid and hot weather. Pure Ramie fiber is also used to create yarn that is very durable, even when wet.
Ramie is a highly absorbent fiber that is white in color and resembles silk. However, it does not stretch nearly as well as silk, which is due to its lesser elasticity. Even though Ramie fabric is one of the toughest natural fibers on earth, it will still tear if subjected to repeated folding over time. Ramie fabric is also mildew and bacteria resistant and is not prone to shrinking.
