A number of cars have qualified for the 2015 Top Safety Picks conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, including the Mazda 3, the Chrysler 200 and the Volvo S60. The IIHS is a U.S. non-profit organization founded by auto insurers.
The IIHS conducts vehicle research by evaluating a car's crashworthiness and crash avoidance and mitigation through high-speed front, side and rear crash tests. Depending on the results of the tests, the IIHS rates each car high, good, marginal or poor. In order for a car to get the Top Safety Pick, it must pass all the tests and get a "good" rating and must offer electronic stability control, which is very useful in reducing crashes.
