According to The Guardian, the UN estimates that between 150-200 species of plants and animals become extinct each day, many without ever being officially discovered and classified by scientists. Mother Nature Network identifies the Baaji dolphin as one of the last "high-profile" extinctions that researchers tracked and confirmed.
Mother Nature Network further explains that the Baaji dolphin is a river dolphin that lived in China's Yangtze River. The last confirmed sighting of the animal was in 2002, and a 2,000 mile search of the river conducted by scientists in 2006 did not reveal any dolphins. The Baaji dolphin's extinction was attributed to over fishing, loss of habitat and poaching.
