What is a recipe for hair pomade?

A natural hair pomade can be made at home by heating a mixture of castor oil, coconut oil and beeswax. A selection of aromatic essential oils may also be added, if desired.

The recipe is as follows:

1. First, a suitable pomade container should be sterilized with rubbing alcohol and set aside.
2. Next, an ounce of beeswax should be placed into a double boiler (or else a heat-safe bowl set inside a saucepan containing about an inch of water, but not so much as to touch the bowl).
3. The beeswax should then be heated through until completely melted.
4. The castor and coconut oils, as well as any essential oils (if using), should be added to the beeswax next.
5. Once heated and mixed together, and before the substance starts to set, the pomade should be transferred to the sterilized container and left uncovered in the freezer to cool and harden.

It is necessary to cool the pomade rapidly in this way in order to avoid a granulated texture. In this event, it would require more thorough heating before use.

Many pomade users enjoy the smell of store-bought versions. If this is the case, these smells can be preserved by adding small amounts of a given brand to natural alternatives, which are made at far less of a cost.
