Common dosages of the arginine supplement are 2 to 3 grams three times daily, according to Web MD. However, there is no standard dose; lower and higher amounts have been studied.
Most persons have enough of the amino acid in their bodies already and do not need the supplement. Nuts, seeds, oats, corn, brown rice, chicken, dairy products and chocolate are natural sources of arginine, explains WebMD.
The long-term safety and benefit of taking the supplement are not clear; patients are advised to consult their doctor physician prior to use. In some instances, doctors have recommended arginine to patients for ailments such as protein malnutrition, inflammation, infections and burns.
