"Red bottoms" is a slang term for shoes designed by French footwear designer Christian Louboutin. The red-lacquered sole is Louboutin's trademark, which the designer says happened in 1993 when he noticed his assistant painting her nails red. It inspired him to paint the soles of all his designs.
Louboutin opened his first boutique in Paris in 1993. As of 2014, there are 93 shops with the Louboutin name that sell nearly a million pairs of shoes each year, for both women and men. Those looking to purchase the shoes can find retailers and distributors of the brand on the official Christian Louboutin website.
